Overview

Overview

What is sphair? Swiss federal programme that prepares people for the airforce. Goal was simple how to get more people to sign to to the programme to find suitable candidates.

To start, a person needs to be both academically and physically proficient. People also need to start young be qualified in the first place. To find good candidates, a wide net needs to be thrown to find suitable people that also are interested in the profession.

Findings

Findings

Most candidates entered the sites on phones, and that's already where the problems started. Everything was spread across three separate sections: pilot, paratrooper and mySPHAIR, each one organised differently, with no single process holding it together.

SPHAIR assumed the visitor already knew what they did and whether they wanted to be a pilot or a paratrooper. So a clear entry point needed to be provided that streamlines the process and gives the necessary information.

«Am I qualified?» and «What do I need to do next?» were the questions that appeard most frequently while following two candidates.

Development

Development

The new structure was tested twice with an independent research partner, a year apart. First on wireframes, then on a high-fidelity prototype, each round meant to catch flaws before the next stage. Seventeen candidates aged 18–25 tested it on their own phones. The navigation held up, but didn't yet give people enough information to act on. Besides that the following major changes were made due to testing feedback.

Maintenance

Maintenance

Each of these fixes had to work identically across pilot, paratrooper, and drone, at mobile and desktop. The Figma prototype needed frequent updates, so I maintained a sitemap and component library.

Outcome

Outcome

A clear understanding of the problem and target group allowed for effective testing, which meant feedback could be implemented steadily. The structure and guidelines now in place allow SPHAIR to easily continue development to meet future demands.
