Overview

Overview

Kunsthaus Zürich came to ZHdK looking for fresh ideas to win younger visitors as long-term members. Their artworks already have real stories behind them, but those stories usually stay buried in academic language and museum archives. We built a way to bring them to the surface. Visitors can scan an artwork they connect with to instantly uncover its story. A smart guide helps them navigate the museum along the way. The pieces that resonate most can be saved and turned into memories to cherish and share.

Research

Research

The project started with on-site observations and interviews with both visitors and staff, looking at how people find their way, interact with the artworks and what they take home with them. Based on these, a user journey was mapped out in three steps, and the biggest pain point in each one was identified.

These insights were combined into one question that focused the process, «How might we help museum visitors discover artworks that create lasting memories?»

Kunsthaus had recently opened a second building, and Dreipol had built the Visitor Guide to help visitors find their way between exhibitions. With insight from Florian Wille, who had previously worked on it, the guide became the foundation for a service that follows the whole visit. It helps visitors ✲ find their way to ✦ discover the stories behind the artworks, and ❊ at the end they can take a memento home in the form of a postcard.

Testing

Testing

A clickable Figma prototype was tested with visitors on site, observing how they navigated its structure and whether they could tell where they were on the map. The main concern, that the new room view would confuse them, turned out to be unfounded. Visitors were able to find their location and information on artworks.

The final design expands on the existing Visitor Guide to cover the whole visit. Going forward, the room beacons can support tailored tours for individual visitors, and AI can take the story feature further, filling in artworks that don't have a story yet.
